THE JOURNEY SO FAR
The first St Mary’s school was founded
in 1984, in Ojo local government area of Lagos. Through the vision and foresight,
of Mrs C.N.Ofili, who trained and worked as a teacher in Scotland, the school was
established with the aim of providing world class education to meet local needs
of our communities.
The nursery and primary schools were oversubscribed
as the reputation of the school grew. With a strong focus on academic excellence
and self reliance, the students excelled, as did the school. This led to proposals
for further expansion across the area.
This same drive for excellence led to
the creation of the first St Mary’s College. After 10 years of striving to get students
into the best secondary schools in the land, through mutual consent of the founders,
the PTA, and the board of trustees, St Mary’s College was founded. This time
however, the aim was not just to get students into the best universities in Nigeria,
but also to mould them into students that are academically and intellectually competitive
on a global scale.
Under the guidance of the founders, the
schools have developed and sustained a culture that stands on 3 primary pillars;
academic excellence, self reliance, and passion for learning. Without trying to
be all things to everyone, we have ensured the schools remains true to these core
values. While the school moves forward with the changes of time, evolving with the
introduction of new technologies, teaching methodologies, and best practice, our
guiding principles remain the same.
We at St Mary’s schools are proud of what
we are doing, the way we are doing it, and strongly believe every child has the
right to share that pride. With the world become a much smaller place, our children
must be prepared to compete against their pars not just in Nigeria but across the
world as well. As such its our responsibility to release the potential in each child.
This can only be achieved by inspiring a passion to learn in each child, which takes
us back to our core values, academic excellence, self reliance and passion for learning.
Having said that, we also recognise the
need to develop well rounded students. To this end we have developed a program of
extra curricular activities that facilitate improved social skills in all our children.
This is a very important aspect of a child’s education which is just as important
as a child finding inspiration in sciences or The Arts.
